This is one of the best and most affordable restaurants you'll ever come across. I've recommended it too many times to count, and were I still living in the city you'd still be able to spot me there about once a week.
The fried chicken sandwich is a work of art, the burgers and fries are very tasty, and the red beans and rice are considerably better than other local restaurants who brag about theirs, claiming prizes they don't deserve. Rooster's on the other hand served me delicious food for many years, and though the menu is short they put a lot of effort into making everything on it a step above the competition.
The owner of Basil's. Rooster's, and the Feathered Cow is also a great guy, who works harder than almost anyone else I know, and he has a gift for coming up with new and absolutely amazing food, which in turn he doesn't charge you an arm and a leg for. Nathan makes the restaurants not just a success, he keeps them affordable enough for the locals to come to on a regular basis.
I've moved to Seattle, a great big city with a wealth of different restaurants, but I have yet to find another place like Rooster's or Basil's, and should I ever return to visit Jackson this will be on the short list of places I'll be eating.
That may be THE best Grilled Chicken Sandwich I've ever had. Wow! So full of flavor, tender and juicy. It was Awesome!
The hamburgers are simple and have a very homemade, backyard grill taste to them. The staff is friendly.
Try the hamburger steak. It's delicious.
I really liked the jalapeno cheddar bun. I was asked how I wanted the burger cooked which is great and it was cooked correctly. The meat did not seem to be that good of quality, though. And the fries were fairly greasy. The person that took my order was not friendly at all, although I have found that to just be the norm in MS. Overall, it was not a bad experience. But it definitely was not worth the price.
Trust me, get the smaller burger on a jalapeno bun you won't go home hungry.
The burgers are first rate, as are the chicken tenders(more like chicken breasts those things are HUGE!). If you aren't in the mood for burgers or chicken, I'd suggest the red beans and rice. No matter what you choose you'll be getting a fine lunch, just come early (or late) because the place is PACKED during lunch.
