Before relocating from NJ to MD, I've obtained quotes from 3 different companies. Smart Move was substantially lower than the other two, making me wonder if it was too good to be true. The low number of existing reviews made me a little nervous, so I did some homework and made sure that they were appropriately licensed & insured, and I could not see any negative comments about them anywhere else, so I decided to go with them.
James N, the owner, came to my place to provide an estimate. He was very pleasant to deal with, sounded very experienced, and provided useful & practical tips which seemed to make a lot of sense. This helped take away some of the moving stress, as I had also seen some attitudes on the cranky side from the other two companies - like "it's best that you pack the liquor bottles yourself, as they tend to make a mess in the truck", or "you need to have a specialty moving company to come and disassemble your elliptical, as we don't do that!". James just sounded easy going and practical.
On Day1, the crew arrived about an hour late, but that much is expected I guess (they were on time or even earlier than ETA on Day2 however). The whole packing process took about 8 hours by 2 people. They were pleasant guys, and diligent and careful with packing items.
Day2 was seamless as well, with me being worried about the disassembly of a large/king size platform bed, but the whole disassembly at the old place and assembly at the new place seemed to go just fine. 4 guys loaded everything into the truck in about 4 hours, which allowed me some time to clean up the place and run some errands right after, in the afternoon.
On Day3, they were flexible around my preference of delivery time, so they arrived at around the time that I has asked for. With the exception of a few minor things, I have not come across anything damaged so far.
All in all, the move went relatively smooth.
Price wise, I was expecting to see a final bill lower than the estimate, as I had packed a lot of things in my own car (all pictures in the house that would otherwise need special packing, all cleaning bottles/sprays, suitcases with personal items, fridge contents, and 4-5 boxes). The final price was ~$40-50 higher than the estimate, which in the big scheme of things (compared to the prices I had gotten from the 2 other companies), was still very reasonable and much lower than what I would have paid, had I selected one of the other two companies.
I was happy overall for having selected SmartMove and would highly recommend them.
